Starring incredible actors Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, “The Odyssey” tells the Greek mythological story of Odysseus’ journey home after fighting in the Trojan War. Directed, produced, and written for the screen by Christopher Nolan, the movie was shot entirely on an IMAX camera, which significantly enhanced viewers’ experiences. Throughout the movie’s 2-hour and 52-minute duration, Christopher Nolan managed to
turn some of the most complex and unrealistic scenes into a masterpiece: to replicate the cyclops described in the original story, a 60-foot puppet was constructed for the actors to physically interact with, rather than simply using CGI to translate it onto the screen. In addition to this extraordinary adaptation, composer Ludwig Göransson recreated ancient Greek instruments to accurately reflect the ancient atmosphere and time period through the movie’s inclusion of music. Beyond the movie’s incredible use of effects and innovation, the story’s themes and messages were effectively and creatively translated through the screen. As one of the greatest pieces of literature, the Odyssey explores trauma, moral responsibility, guilt, identity loss, exile, and acceptance, going far beyond a simple myth. Despite the criticism toward the movie because of its slightly inaccurate interpretations of the story’s original plot, I highly recommend watching it in theaters. It’s engaging throughout the entire length of the movie, with dramatic twists and captivating events. -Yael Ben-Sira
