“Hundreds of Beavers” is a little-known gem of the film world. Though it receives little widespread attention or recognition when compared to the behemoth blockbuster movies of today, “Hundreds of Beavers” is truly a masterpiece of film design, story telling, and on-screen comedy. This cult classic has gathered an albeit small, but extremely passionate fanbase through its brilliance, and is widely acclaimed among critics, holding a 97% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being made in 2022, this film utilizes no spoken words, and is produced only in black and white, mimicking
older classics from the era of silent film. This lends itself strongly to the comedic style of the movie quite well, alongside the uses of choice sound effects and background music (the only sounds throughout the film) to create the atmosphere the film needs to succeed. This works perfectly in tandem with the production style of the movie, with intentionally obvious cut and paste, lower quality editing and effects, and costuming design featuring actors in beaver costumes, rather than real or CGI beavers to create laugh-out-loud at every turn. The movie follows the owner of a brewery in Canada. Misfortune befalls him, and his brewery is destroyed in a freak accident, leaving him exposed to the elements in the harsh Canadian winter. The story follows his quest to survive the winter and become the greatest fur trapper in North America, and to win the heart of the love interest, the furrier, as played by Olivia Graves. With comedy, romance, adventure, and a more complex plot than meets the eye, this movie has something for every viewer. This film is full of laughs and groans, the intentionally low-quality looking production adds to the comedic gold that this movie is. So don’t let the lesser recognition scare you away, this slapstick, absurdist movie is potentially one of the greatest comedy films of this century. –Quinn Fisher
